I downloaded the 2017 Sketchup Make version, but it's a 30 day trial version, so it looks like it's not really going to do me any good. Then I was met with the "you can't save in the trial version" message and lost all my work. I played a bit with Chief Architect last night, and was really pleased with its accessibility, while still appearing decently robust. It's a great free autocad 2D alternative. I've just redrafted flat sheets in Nanocad when I've needed them. 3D warehouse downloads no longer available in 2017 versions, but at least there's a workaround.). Would love layout, but I just can justify the subscription model costs with how fully functional the older Make is although they are slowly making it harder to use (i.e. The availability of 3d models for download both from the 3D warehouse and from manufacturer websites is also awesome. The higher detail has saved me several times with realizing minor changes were required to allow space for moldings, plumbing, ductwork, etc. Bit of a learning curve, especially figuring out how to efficiently use layers and outliner. My remodel has taken a hundred year old house down to the studs and I've modeled everything within a quarter inch accuracy. Extremely flexible and able to model at a much higher detail. I think some of their more advanced versions could have though. It just didn't work to model my rooflines for a 1-1/2 story cape cod. Pretty easy to use and much quicker than building in Sketchup, but fairly inflexible. Good luck! Designing and building your own home is a very stressful, but highly rewarding process! If you have trouble finding the download PM me and I can send you the install package I downloaded from sketchup a year or two ago. The real reason they don't want you using 2017 version is that they don't get money out of it. Consider sketchup's ' warning', then download and install 2017 make verison anyway. Consider this, if you have a architect design your house for you, between the going back and forth on changes and initial design time you're looking at $3-4K investment right there.Īlso, what 'free version' are you using? If you're using the web version of the software dump it immediately. There are a few quality of life differences that are nice but in no way necessary.įor moving the camera, click your mouse scroll wheel and Shift +click your mouse scroll wheel.įor building your own home $300 is a drop in the bucket really. The only real advantage of the Pro version vs the 2017 version in my opinion is access to Layout. The free version is enough, and you can get a no limits trial of the Pro version. Sketchup is much more beginner friendly and plenty powerful to design a house. I learned autocad in high school in the early 2000's. I used it to design my custom house that I'm building now. Thanks a lot for reading the giant wall of text! I think I can handle the learning curve, but I have no intention to model a lot of things myself, so it'd be better if it had an easily accessible library of 3d models that are free to use.Īny other software recommendation is more than welcome, and I'd say that I'd like to stay under $100 total (last resort, I'll do it in the Sims 4.). I heard that Blender was pretty good but had a steep learning curve. My goal is to have something that would look nice, that I could share with my family so that they have a good understanding of what I'm trying to achieve, and possibly, with an architect or a builder, to get that house actually done eventually. The terrible lag I had while following the super simple tutorial "how to design a house in ten steps in Sketchup", which had 4 walls, a floor, a roof, and I added only a few items inside.Limited functionality of the free version. The giant 3D model library (thanks so much to everyone who contributed/contributes to it, that thing is pretty awesome).I have no issue paying for a good software that I use, but as a hobbyist that will likely "design" the one house and never use it again, $300 seems bit steep for a one year subscription. I tried Sketchup Free briefly, and it seems to be pretty easy to use, but it lags terribly and I hate the fact that I can't navigate the camera easily (WASD or even the arrow keys). Hey y'all, I have a few ideas in my head that I'd like to model for the house I'd like to build/have built.
